St Matthew's Centre, Eccleston Park

A vibrant community space at the heart of local life—home to our food pantry, toddler group, and outreach events

St Matthew's Centre

St Matthew’s, Thatto Heath is a much-loved community hub and church building with a big heart for local outreach. Though we don’t currently meet here for Sunday worship every week, it’s home to vital ministries like the food pantry, youth group, and toddler group—building real connections and sharing God’s love in practical ways.

Activities

For Our Community

For many in Thatto Heath, St Matthew’s is known simply as “my church”—whether they come to support the Food Pantry, our weekly toddler group, the St Matthew’s Pre School Nursery, occasional social events, or life’s biggest moments.

The church has long served the community through baptisms, weddings, and funerals. We’re committed to seeing the role of St Matthews grow and develop as we invest in necessary building repairs and improvements. There are hundreds of visitors to the centre every week, and it is fast becoming a hub of exciting activity for Thatto Heath.

Community Garden

As part of our commitment to revitalising St Matthew’s, a new community Garden was established recently. This is what the St Helens Star had to say about it:

“This week, St Helens Borough Council Leader Anthony Burns and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Cllr Nova Charlton, were proud to attend the grand unveiling of the new community garden at St Matthew’s Centre Your Local Pantry in Thatto Heath.

Opened by the High Sheriff of Merseyside Billy Hui, the garden is a shining example of community spirit and collaboration. Funded by Rotary Rainhill, Torus Foundation, B&Q and Lidl, the project was brought to life through the dedication of local young people involved in The King’s Trust – led by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.

The space features beautifully arranged railway sleepers, planted with fruit and vegetables, designed to complement St Matthew’s Centre Your Local Pantry which provides vital support to the local community. A big thank you to everyone who made this inspiring project possible!”
